My journey through the ups and downs of being owned by FUR BABIES! The family consists of: two domestic short-hair cats, one Havashu (Shih tzu/Havanese mix) dog, and a brand new Miniature Schnauzer pup.
Sebastian
Name: Sebastian (after my favorite composer, Bach)
Breed: Domestic short-haired cat
DOB: March, 2009
Joined the Family: May, 2009
Sebastian is generally pretty laid back. He likes BAGS, and he will crawl into them whenever given the opportunity (as you can see.) He's pretty happy to kick back and nap on his own. The only time he gets really demanding of our attention is at MEAL TIME.
A couple years ago, Sebastian got sick. We might've missed some of the early warning signs, such as lethargy, because he's pretty lazy and inactive as a rule. But, when he stopped grooming himself and we began to notice potty accidents outside the litter box, we realize our sweet cat was ill. It only took the vet a couple quick tests to determine the cause. He was diagnosed with diabetes.
Our WONDERFUL veterinarian recommended treating it aggressively, with high doses of insulin. At first, we were unsure, because the insulin she wanted to use was VERY costly. We asked her about less expensive options, but she hoped that by following a specific treatment plan, he would NOT be insulin dependent forever. For about three months, we gave him two shots a day. He isn't much of a scratcher or a biter, but he DID get to know the routine, and when it was time for his shots, he would disappear. Yeah, he made us chase him around the house. And yeah, I accidentally stabbed myself with his insulin pen a couple times. But ... the treatment plan worked! He is no longer on insulin.
We control his blood sugar strictly with diet now. He eats canned food, the higher in protein, the better, and gets fed on a schedule. He STILL hates not being able to eat on demand, but nobody misses the insulin shots! Most importantly, he feels good enough to occasionally wrestle with his brother and jump up on the counter to survey the bag situation (after 9 years, we still leave one sitting out every now and then, and he's not going to miss it when it happens.)
